COMMUNITY CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT UNIT (CCDU)

Based on the experience of COODU in the formation of WATSAN committees, training of beneficiaries under TSC, construction of IHHLs and creation of awareness on water and sanitation in Coimbatore district, the TWAD Board has selected the Organisation in the year 2006 to implement programmes under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission such as situation analysis, participatory rural appraisal, IEC activities, etc., and to conduct various training programmes in association with the Communication and Capacity Building Unit (CCDU) of the TWAD Board. COODU had conducted the following training programmes sponsored by the CCDU –TWAD Board.

Programme ON SAFE Drinking water AND SANITATION in Tirupur district

The TWAD Board and sanctioned to undertake awareness programme on safety drinking water in 13 blocks in Tiruppur district to conduct drinking water safety week campaign for testing water quality of drinking water sources in Tiruppur district through

CCDU LAB

There are five sub district level laboratories each with five staff with a capacity to test 3000 samples in an year located in Tiruvannamalai-1, the Nilgris-2, Tiruppur-2 and Sivaganga-1. At the district level, there are five laboratories tasked with payment of salaries and maintenance.

FUNCTIONS

From the samples, the quality of water, satisfying all parameters in each water source, is ascertained.
Contaminated source is removed of pollutants and water quality restored.

IMPACTS:

  • Supply of quality water, satisfying all parameters, in assured.
  • Source of pollutant is either removed or destroyed.
  • Allocation of fund for cleaning agents and materials is ensured in village Panchayat Budget.
  • All Rural villages are assured of potable water.
  • Contaminated source is immediately attended to, cleaned and restored to clean status, based on lab report.
  • Lab reports on quality of water satisfying all parameters, influence Government Policy on Potable water.

NIRMAL GRAM PURASHKAR AWARD: VERIFICATION OF PANCHAYATS

In 2008-09, COODU was one of the Non-Government Organisations selected by the Central Government from Tamilnadu for the implementation of Nirmal Gram Purashkar scheme. COODUundertook investigation in the following districts of Andhra Pradesh i.e. West Godhavari, East Godavari, Srikakulam, Krishna and Vijayanagaram.470 village Panchayats were investigated by the team of 60 members for the period of two months after which COODU submitted its final report to the Central government. The reinvestigating team of Central government also accepted and appreciated the work done by COODU organization. The ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has assigned the organisation with evaluation of 385 Gram Panchayats in the State of Maharshtra in 2010-11 The task entails household survey on drinking water supply and erection of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL). The entire area is inspected for cleanliness. Open defection, if practiced, is noted. Public toilets are inspected to ascertain availability of water and cleanliness. Safe disposal of solid and liquid wastes are monitored. Drainages are inspected for collection of liquid waste from households and safe disposal of sewerage. COODU had carried out evaluation in the districts of Nagpur, Parbani, Nanded and Nandurbhar and submitted the findings to the ministry.
IMPACTS:
Members and office bearers as well as people have become aware of the need for a healthy environment.
Many village Panchayats have become open defecation free and proud of it.
People have applied for and constructed latrines under Total Sanitation Campaign and later Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan
Village Panchayat administrations have begun to implement solid waste management and constructed sewerages.
Toilet blocks for men and women have been constructed separately for people residing in rented houses or for people with no space for construction of latrines.
