WATER AND SANITATION AWARENESS TRAINING PROGRAM – CCDU IN 10 DISTRICTS

To establish and to address the need of sustainability in water sanitation, and to promote new technologies and other Rural Water Supply Programs and to take up advocacy on conventional and traditional water conservation and rain water harvesting COODU has implemented “Water and sanitation awareness training program in 10 following districts:

To make aware of the community and stakeholders on the importance on sustainability in water and sanitation COODU has planned to prepare, print and disseminate IEC materials. Moreover with guidance from Communication and Capacity Development Unit (CCDU), COODU has organised the following training 23 trainings in 10 districts.

Information, Education and Communication materials like Hand Bills, Bit Notices and pamphlets were prepared, printed and distributed to all over the target areas.

These materials described the following contents:

  • Use of safe and clean of drinking water
  • Judicious use of drinking water
  • Water harvesting techniques
  • Reuse and Recycling of water
  • Protection of drinking water sources
  • Awareness among Women Self Help Grooups, Joint Liability Groups, Water User Groups and community Groups
  • Hygiene Behaviour
  • Waterborne Diseases
  • Gender specific water issues

WATER QUALITY MONITORING WORKS – TESTING LABORATORY, IN 6 DISTRICTS

To cater sustainable clean potable drinking water to the people COODU has implemented Water Quality Monitoring Works – Testing Laboratory. Under national Rural Drinking Water Program implemented by Government of India through TWAD Board, Government of Tamil Nadu, COODU has volunteered to take up and to maintain the testing laboratory to test water quality for physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters. This water testing were carried out in 6 Centers in 4 Districts namely:

COODU has established 6 water testing centers to conduct drinking water quality analysis once in pre-monsoon and post-monsoorn seasons in a year for chemical and bacteriological parameters. The following thirteen basic parameters were tested in 6 centers.

  • Total Hardness
  • Total Alkalinity
  • Chloride
  • Fluoride
  • Sulphate
  • Nitrate
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Residual Chlorine
  • Faecal Coli forms

The following works were entrusted to the analysts.

  • Testing of 12 Chemical parameters
  • Preparation of reagents for 12 Chemical parameters
  • Testing of Fecal Coliforms by Membrane Filter(MF) Technique and sterilization

Above said methodologies were adapted to all the 6 centers to established and 18,000 sources were collected totally and tested to check that the water could be used for drinking purposes (to be potable or non potable).

LAKE CONSERVATION PROGRAM – OOTY TOWN, THE NILGIRIS DISTRICT

The Nilgiris is called as Queen of the Western Ghats, and the entire The Nilgiris district depends upon tourism and tea estates. The District capital Uthagamandalam @ Ooty is always filled with tourist. The situated in the centre of the Ooty is always collect rain water and percolate it, stops the soil runoff and stop the gully formation. The disposed garbage waste by the tourist filled in the ditches and stop the flow of water and makes the city dingy and polluted city. Hence COODU has organised a awareness program with the collaboration with the District Administration and conducted awareness campaign. The following activities have organised :

WORKSHOP ON OOTY LAKE CONSERVATION FOR OOTY MERCHANTS & SHOPKEEPERS:

Kodappa Mandhu a small stream runs through Ooty town reaches Ooty Lake. This stream brings water from the hill tops and pours water to rejuvenate the Lake. Now the streams disappeared with plastic wastes and other bushes and shrubs. Hence COODU has organised a special training program for the traders to make aware how their sold goods spoil the lake. This training was organised at xxx and xxx traders were participated.

WORKSHOP ON OOTY LAKE CONSERVATION FOR UDAGAMANDALAM MUNICIPAL COUNCILLORS:

Without equipping the elected Ooty Municipality members it is difficult to clean and conserve the lake, hence COODU has organised a special training program. This special training program was organised for 31 elected ward members. This training program was organised at 9th October, 2017 at Training hall, Department of Horticulture, Chering Cross, Ooty.

DISTRIBUTION OF HANDBILLS

Though the distribution of carry bags is banned in Ooty town, tourists brought it from plain areas and they thrown it on the streets. The thrown water bottles and carry bags deposited in the lake and started polluting it. Special notices have been prepared and printed by COODU and the same was distributed to the living population and tourist population of Ooty Town. In this notice they were advised not to through the water bottles and plastic carry bags.

SIGN BOARDS:

Sign Board was installed in many important places like Road Junctions, Vegitable Marakets, Lake, Game Shows Mall, Bus Stand and Railway Stations. Folowing captions were written in Thamil Language.

OOTY LAKE CONSERVATION WALKATHON, RALLY & MASS CLEANING CAMPAIGN.

To create mass and to initiate the activities awareness on Clean Lake COODU has organised a walkathon in Ooty Town. In this walkathon, Students, Small and Petty Vendors, Shop Keepers, other NGOs, Social Activists had participated.

A mass rally was organised with the support of DSSC , Wellington, Coonoor, School Children, High and Higher Secondary School Children, Municipal Workers, Udagamandalam Municipal Corporations. Lt. Gen. S.K. Gadeock, Commandant DSSC, Wellington and The Nilgiris Collector P. Sankar inaugurated the program at Udagamandalam Lake. Many Military Officers, Jawans involved in Mass Cleaning Campaign.
