WOMEN AND LIVELIHOOD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

WOMEN SELF HELP GROUPS (SHGs)

With the support and guidance of Mahalir Thittam of Tamil Nadu Corporation of Development of Women, COODU organization has organized rural and urban women, who are marginalized and un-organized, in 89 habitations and formed Self Help Groups, as the grass root level functional forces.

The women SHGs are successfully managing the groups with the guidance and support of the staff team and with the local banks.

Micro-credit for Income Generation Activities

In order to develop the economical independency of women and to provide alternate employment opportunities to retain the women work force by preventing migration, COODU has guided the women SHGs to avail credits from financial institutions to establish their own employment units by utilizing the available local resources in order to ensure their economical sustainability such as,

INCOME GENERATION PROGRAMS UNDER SAMPOORNA GRAMIN ROJGAR YOJANA (SGRY) FOR SC / ST.

The Central Government has launched the SGRY to provide employment to labourers including Agricultural labourers in drought affected areas. The plan envisages generation of employment by executing various infrastructure development and maintenance works. In additions to cash, Rice is also supplied / paid to the labourers as a portion of wages. The DRDA – Coimbatore had entrusted Infrastructure development and maintenance works to COODU, which have all been successfully completed by engaging the landless and agricultural labourers in Pongalur block, achieving more than 1200 man days.

TREAD – ( Trade Related Entrepreneurship Assistance & Development for Women )

The ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises has sanctioned the TREAD programme to empower the rural poor women through capacity building.

To start enterprises the government had given a grant of Rs.8.31 Lakhs and COODU had beneficiaries in obtaining bank loan to the tune of Rs.18.84 Lakhs. As envisaged 190 poor families have attained sustainable livelihood.

In the target area agriculture is the only and predominant life sustaining source and the secondary occupation such as rearing milch animals and goat and sheep rearing, based on the concept that many times in the lives of rural people, the secondary occupation have meet out the losses occurred in the primary occupation, that is the agriculture. The success of the IGP in terms of repayment and sustainable income for the house to meet out the emergency needs.

Trade Related Entrepreneurship Assistance & Development for Women (TREAD)

The ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises has sanctioned the TREAD programme to empower the rural poor women through capacity building in the year 2010-2011.

The plans envisaged imparting managerial and technical skills to the poor women and also equip them through experiential learning to enable them to start micro-enterprises.

Technologies have been chosen keeping in view the absorption capacity of the beneficiaries, its commercial viability and market demand for the products.

Beneficiaries who are already into thrift activities and micro credit with experience in group management and accounting has been chosen.

COODU, through its multi-dimensional teams imparted training to 190 women SHG members on the following activities:

TRAINING TO WOMEN SHG MEMBERS

COODU has been instrumental in providing Skill Training and Capacity Building to women in SHG groups and as a result several women have obtained skills in new ventures. Some of the trainings include raising of seedlings in nurseries, plantations and other agro-products, vermin-composting, training in electronics and computers, financial management and book keeping.

The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India had selected COODU to impart Integrated Handloom training to women SHG members, especially those traditionally engaged in weaving. The Organisation has organised the training for 90 women SHG members in 2006.

190 women SHGs were trained in the TREAD programme of MSME GOI on different skills for making Apparel, Jute Products, Footwear, Gloves and Fast Food.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

COODU provides Training in Entrepreneurship Development to all SHG members in different trades. They are provided with technical support and vocational skills training. They are also provided with guidance on project planning and implementation. The Resource Persons for the EDP are drawn from various government and non-government institutions including cooperatives, banks, academic institutions, practitioners and entrepreneurs. As a result of EDP training provided by COODU to SHG members, many women have got trained and are presently engaged in profitable entrepreneurial activities. They are in turn sharing such benefits to other women in their groups.
